Life
Story and Mission:
Long, long ago, (well, not that long
ago), I was a little person frolicking
about in the forest, dreaming of
fairies, pixies, elves, rainbows and
sparkling things of all kinds. In the
spring, I would go searching for
bluebells, dog-toothed violets, and
mayapples, hoping to catch a glimpse of
a genuine magical forest creature. At
night, listening to the cricket’s chorus
and watching the fireflies begin their
rhythmic dancing outside my window,
sleep was sometimes slow in coming. I
would cross my eyes to make the patterns
on the wallpaper dance and move,
thinking that there must be something
magical that I could use to lure sleep
in, draw it closer, and hasten it’s
arrival.
Well,
that wistful thinking came true when I
discovered guided imagery, meditation,
and relaxation techniques as a “big
person,” an adult. With these amazing
tools, I entered the wondrous, colorful
world of my imagination, a place of
endless possibility, a place beyond
words.
As a parent, I began to understand that
the more I explored the vast terrain of
my imagination, the more I could
remember, speak, and understand the
language of play. In the beginning, I
limited my practice to sitting on a
meditation cushion once a day. But, then
I started to recognize opportunities for
imagination and relaxation use
throughout my daily activities. Within
the power of my own imagination, I would
add a little pixie dust to my feet in
the morning, see mountains for strength
when I needed a boost of support,
envision jumping through clouds when my
shoulders felt tense. The more I played,
the more I remembered, the more I
remembered, the lighter and more
cheerful my parenting and life became.
Suddenly the world of laundry,
deadlines, and rushing about took on a
new dimension and became technicolor. My
imagination was now a tool in my pocket,
and, good news, I did not have to think
at all about where I had put it, which
car it was in, what time I dropped it
off, etc. . . .
Before
long, I decided to put my new tools to
use at work as well. As a school
psychologist, I realized that using the
imagination and teaching students to
relax had extremely beneficial effects
related to reducing anxiety, supporting
positive peer interaction, enhancing
concentration and establishing overall
emotional wellbeing.
So, my
mission has become to carry a little
pixie dust, some sunbeams, and a
treasure chest of relaxation jewels
wherever I go, to imagine that stars
flow with my movements and that glitter
dusts my footprints. I am dedicated to
inspiring parents, children, and
educators to dip into the wellspring of
their imaginations, natural pathways to
achievement, peace, joy, confidence and
adventure. I hope we can play along
together soon!!!! A pocketful of wishes
to your imagination exploration. A
myriad of adventures lies within.
