to calm the body (through progressive
muscle relaxation and body scan) and
focus the mind (through mindfulness).
All activities are grouped by age of
child for easy reference and access.
There is a CD included that leads

Researched Based Program of Relaxation,
Learning and Self Esteem for Children
By
Jeffrey S. Allen, M.Ed. and Roger J.
Klein, Psy.D.
ISBN
0-9636027-0-5
This book
contains a multitude of progressive
relaxation scripts that can be used with
elementary age children. The
introductory chapters address topics
such as stress and the effects on
children, various methods of relaxation,
intervention strategies, research behind
the program, and ideas for application.
I like this book because it takes an
extra step to provide ideas for
discussion related to the scripts,
additional books, and activities to
deepen the process and integration of
the experience.
Honoring
the Light of the Child
Activities to Nurture Peaceful Living
Skills in Young Children
By Sonny
McFarland
This book is
delightful! Children love the
activities included. As you explore the
contents, you will encounter many ways
to address the body awareness, mind
awareness, emotional awareness and
spiritual awareness for children. The
book has a deep, organic beautiful sense
that supports the reader in establishing
a true connection with children as you
are carrying out the activities within.
Find your love light, adventure with
Black Elk as you walk the path of peace,
and enjoy the beautiful mindfulness that
results.
The
Compassionate Classroom:
Relationship Based Teaching and Learning
By Sura
Hart
This book
provides many lessons to support
children in identifying their feelings
and needs. Children learn the
difference between “giraffe vs. jackal
language” and techniques in nonviolent
communication.
The
Joyful Child
A
Sourcebook of Activities and Ideas for
Releasing Children’s Natural Joy
By Peggy
Jenkins, Ph.D.
I love the
chapter on “Joyous Self-Talk”. It
teaches children that self-talk is
self-management and our feelings
determine our actions. There are also
many beautiful songs. The entire book
is centered around joy and how to expand
one’s experience of it.

How to
Teach Children and Teenagers to Think
Positive and Feel Good
By Daniel
G. Amen
This little
paperback book provides a clear
definition and pathway to teaching
children how our thoughts are linked to
brain chemistry and how we have the
power to choose. Highlights include
ANTS or “automatic negative thoughts”
and how to get rid of them. I don’t
particularly like the ant “extermination
process” so when I present it to
children, I change “killing the ants” to
an ant relocation program, (slightly
more positive outlook in my opinion).
Overall, I find this to be a very useful
resource and a great basis for an
informational bulletin board within the
classroom/office/home.
