Safety Bubbles
This activity is perfect
for addressing and calming bedtime fears
and worries. I have used it also as my
daughters are traveling away from home.
My daughter will call on the phone and
request that we co-create a safety
bubble so that she will feel safe and
calm.
-
Tell
your child that you are going to
create a space where everything is
safe.
-
Imagine that there is
a bubble all around you.
-
Ask your child what
color he/she would like to create
the bubble.
-
Explain that this is
a bubble of love, peace and
calmness. It is a bubble that has
only good feelings inside of it. It
surrounds you and keeps out any
feelings or thoughts that don't help
you to feel good at the moment.
This is a very strong bubble.
Nothing gets through your bubble
that you do not want. This bubble
can be any color that you would
like. (At this point you can
explain how blue is often associated
with calm energy, green with healing
energy, yellow with bright happy or
creative energy, pink with love
energy, and red with powerful
energy).
-
After you have
practiced imagining that there is a
safety bubble all around your child,
he or she can add sparkles, stars,
sprinkles, trucks, power action
figures, or whatever else to
personalize the bubble. Make it fun
and creative, there are infinite
creative possibilities.
Safety bubbles can be
used when going to school to help a
child feel safe. Also before a sporting
event, going to the doctor, a
challenging conversation, or anytime
your child wants to establish greater
feelings of peace and security. They
can be imagined around the body, around
the bed, or around an entire room,
house, or car. These bubbles can be
drawn out during artistic expression to
further establish their creative
presence.
