Recently I had the opportunity to visit New York City. While I was there I saw the show Wicked on Broadway. Wicked tells the story of the Wizard of Oz and tells it from the perspective of the witches from Oz. Sitting in the sixth row, I was able to truly connect with the energy and power of the music. I could actually feel the musical vibrations, see the detailed fabric of the costumes and share in the intensity of the acting. I was pulled into an emotional journey where I laughed and cried, sometimes at the same time. When the main character, Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, sang the song, Defying Gravity, I felt and empowering energy fill my body. As she sang, she was lifted up on stage in brilliant beams of radiant light. She belted out confidence in her ability to defy gravity and fulfill her dreams.
This song has impacted my life. I used to sing to a recording of it as I drove to work each day. Now, having experienced it live, I have opened more deeply to its meaning for me. As I thought more about it, I realized that I want to truly defy the gravity of my own thoughts. Accomplishing that, I realize that I can fly in the direction of my dreams. There are thoughts that pull me down and make my experience of life heavy. Also, just as Elphaba belted forth, I am through playing by the rules of someone else’s game”. Which means that I have picked up some thoughts along the way that don’t belong to me. They might have been planted in my mind in the past or through interactions, but they no longer support the feelings of well-being that I am growing in my life. Therefore, by paying attention to my thinking, I “kiss goodbye” the ones that no longer serve and replace them with thoughts that feel good and expand my sense of joy. As I have been practicing this I am feeling more able to “trust my instincts” and have been able to “close my eyes and leap”, really leap forward in the manifestation of my intentions. So, I encourage you to defy gravity. To really allow yourself to fly. To teach your children the link between powerful thinking and powerful action in the world. We are all truly unlimited.
