Give your child a relaxation and self-calming tool to feel deeply loved and secure in a moment’s notice. The Big Bear Hug is just that, a BIG bear hug….for yourself. Next time when your child’s energy is erratic and he is having a hard time settling down, help him to give himself a big bear hug to settle his energy. Or, when your child is feeling upset and needs a tool to self-soothe, the big bear hug is a perfect tool to help himself gather his energy back to himself, to center, and to re-focus.
If your child is having a hard time with the concept or is very young, use a teddy bear to help her understand. Hold the teddy and give the teddy a Big bear hug. Then try it without the teddy after she seems to get it. If she is calm and relaxed, and gives you permission, you can also give her a Big bear hug and/or try it on yourself to model first. I love giving myself Big bear hugs! They feel so so good!!
Be sure to remind your child that the BIG bear hug is available all the time, whenever he might need it. He can use the Big bear hug while sitting in circle time at school, before bed at night, after an argument with his sister, or any time he feels afraid or needs to calm down his body and his mind. This BIG bear hug is the perfect tool to help him feel safe, loved, and in charge of his own feelings, body and mind.
BIG BEAR HUG
First, open your arms wide out in front of you.
Take a deep breath in and relax your body. Slowly let the breath back out.
Then cross your arms over your body and give yourself a squeeze. Ask your child if the squeeze feels good or not, if not, then just hold your arms in the hug position and feel the love from inside your heart begin to spread all over your body!
Next, imagine that you are being held in love, repeat to yourself, “I am calm, safe, and secure. I can feel my love inside of me!”
Hold yourself in the BIG bear hug for as long as you need until you feel your body and mind are calm and relaxed.
Remember, relaxation practice is about having FUN and feeling good…have FUN relaxing!!!
